
The following is a list of terms to help us as we determine what kind of figurative language is used throughout scripture.
Figure of Speech - a form of expression (as a simile or metaphor) used to convey meaning or heighten effect often by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning or connotation familiar to the reader or listener
Metaphor - a figure of speech of which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them (as in drowning in money)
Hyperbole - great exaggeration
Simile – when two unlike things are compared by resemblance, using the words like or as
Sarcasm – words that are meant to insult
Personification - things represented as persons; words that don’t make sense literally
Ellipsis – words that are left out
